Anthropic, the company behind the popular Claude AI assistant, has developed an interactive tool to explore potential economic impacts of AI on the U.S. economy over the next few years. The tool presents two scenarios: one where AI provides a modest boost to productivity with minimal disruption to workers, and another where AI dramatically transforms the economy, leading to significant GDP growth but also high unemployment—nearly 14% of workers losing jobs with fewer than half finding new roles. The outcomes depend on factors like technology capability, adoption speed, and whether AI supports or replaces workers.
Anthropic experts note that while AI will likely advance rapidly, its economic diffusion may be slower than anticipated. A survey of nearly 11,000 people found mixed expectations: most expect productivity and economic growth to increase, but also anticipate substantial job disruption in AI-sensitive fields. The speed of AI adoption will be critical.
If widely adopted, AI could drive unprecedented GDP growth—potentially seven times current levels—offering policymakers new revenue sources to support affected workers. However, if adoption is slow, AI’s economic impact may remain limited.
